Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a ‘nose job,’ refers to a surgical procedure to modify the shape or function of the nose and improve breathing. It’s one of the most common types of plastic surgery and is performed for a variety of reasons, some functional, some aesthetic.

Any number of factors can contribute to a misshapen or structural issue of the nose — heredity, trauma, or even previous surgery.

What changes can be made during a rhinoplasty?

  • The size and symmetry of the nose can be altered to enhance facial balance.
  • Any bumps or depressions on the bridge of the nose can be straightened.
  • The width of the bridge or appearance of the nostrils can be narrowed.
  • The tip of the nose, whether enlarged, drooping, upturned or hooked, can be modified.

A rhinoplasty is often done in combination with a septoplasty. This procedure straightens the bone and cartilage dividing the space between your two nostrils. This correction or reshaping of any deformities aims to improve breathing and sinus function.

Rhinoplasty: Before and after

The consultation

Rhinoplasties are typically performed in-hospital, either with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. During the procedure, incisions are either made between or inside the nostrils with reshaping taking place between your skin and cartilage or bone.

In some cases, when additional cartilage is required, it may be taken from your septum or deeper in the nose. In addition, if the septum is deviated, it is straightened and corrected. After 1-2 hours, the procedure is typically complete.

Rhinoplasty

Immediately after the procedure, you will be monitored in a recovery room and may have a splint on your nose to support your nose as it heals. Full recovery can be expected in a few weeks, but some subtle effects may last for months.
